COVID-19 Links
Like most New Yorkers and many Virginians (mentioned because Virginia is my home state and where I still spent quite a bit of time pre-pandemic), I began self-quarantining in March 2020. Thus, I began spending more time creating at home and just generally online. I'm naturally a hyperactive creator, but my anxiety pushed me into an especially productive frenzy early on in quarantine. I had to take action as the artist-in-residence at HeartShare Human Services of New York, which experienced great COVID-related losses. I also felt Quail Bell Magazine had to issue a response, as well. (Check out our Creation in Isolation series and Lunar Phoenix: Anthology of Black Voices.)
The COVID-19 pandemic inspired many traditional gatekeepers—editors, curators, producers, etc.—to develop new digital initiatives since in-person events were not an option. Intentionally or not, this push seemed to open up opportunities to emerging or under-recwww.facebook.com/donate/672442630368534/ognized creatives in ways I had never seen before. After first I thought it was my imagination, but during one of the Google Hangouts for the Socially Distant Artist Residency Program, fellow artists and writers shared the same observation. I responded to open calls with gusto and jumped at personal invitations. I was lucky to have many pieces published and exhibited as early as the first week of quarantine.
I will be using this space to post links to the many digital features and projects I participated in from March through July 2020. This is when most of the calls and initiatives framed themselves specifically as COVID-themed, which I noticed die off beginning in August.
