Mixteco/RVA
In 2012, the Puffin Foundation awarded me a national emerging artist grant in photography to pursue my artist book Mixteco/RVA. The book centered on my exploration of linguistic injustice in my home state of Virginia. The grant also funded the printing and framing of a large photograph from my artist book. The photo was installed at Sacred Heart Center, a Latino community center in Richmond, VA; the artist book was later shown at the now-defunct Virginia Center for Latin American Art (VACLAA). Mixteco/RVA was also connected to Guadalajara 35mm, a curatorial photography project that I designed and led with the support of VCU, the University of Guadalajara (Mexico), and VACLAA. These projects eventually led to me authoring a non-fiction history book called Hispanic & Latino Heritage in Virginia.
